Late GP Koirala Receives Nepal Ratna Award by President Yadav

At a programme organized at the Office of the President, Sheetal Niwas, today, president Dr. Ram Baran Yadav presented the ‘Nepal Ratna’ award to former Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala (Posthumous). Daughter of late Koirala and former Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala received the award on behalf the late leader Koirala.
This is the highest civilian award given to a Nepali citizen since Nepal became a republic and Koirala is the first recipient. The five times PM was also acting head of state between January 2007 and July 2008. He made substantive contributions to Nepal’s road to republicanism and was the architect of the ongoing peace and constitution drafting processes.
GP Koirala will be remembered for his life-long struggle for democracy, peace and development, managing the transition to republicanism peacefully bringing the former rebels into the democratic process and laying the foundation for a modern Nepal where real development can finally take shape.
The medals and decorations were announced on May 29, 2014.
Present on the occasion were the Vice president, the Chief Justice, the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly (CA), the Deputy Prime Minister Duo and chiefs of the Constitutional Bodies. The Ministry of Home Affairs has been making arrangement and recommendations regarding the medals.
